紅葉のシーズンもそろそろ終わり、いよいよ１２月です。
日本では旧暦１２月のことを師走（shiwasu）とよんできました。その語源は、この月になると多くの家で師や僧 (priest or monk) を迎えて読経などの仏事を行うため、師が東西に忙しく走り回るためにそうなったという説が有力です。
Shi means a priest or monk at temples and "wasu" stands for "running" in Kanji character.
日を追う毎になんとなく気ぜわしい雰囲気につつまれてきますが、新年を迎える期待感もあり年末のイベントは楽しいものです。
人それぞれ１２月といえば思い浮かぶものが違うかもしれませんが、この月ならではの風物詩 (thing that reminds one of a particular season) をいくつかあげてみましょう。日本特有の行事や習慣で英語圏にないものも多いので、短く英語に訳すのが難しいかもしれません。
大掃除：general cleaning, year-end cleaning etc.
クリスマス: Christmas
おおみそか : New Year’s Eve
除夜の鐘 : Joyano kane, the bell on new year’s eve
お歳暮: a year-end gift , winter gift
冬至：winter solstice
年越しそば：buckwheat noodles eaten New Year’s Eve, tohsikoshi soba
年賀状：New Year’s card
忘年会：Year-end party
冬休み：winter holidays, winter break, winter vacation
針供養：a memorial (requiem) service for broken needles
御用納め：the closing of office business for the year, the last business day of the year
歳末助け合い運動：a year-end charity champaign(drive)
